Aviation Student Earns Private Pilot’s License

Justin Chirco, a high school senior from Center Moriches UFSD, became this year’s first Aviation/Private Pilot Training student to earn his Private Pilot’s License. While completing his classes remotely, he worked toward the certification by submitting distance learning assignments ahead of time and continuing to log flight hours. When Mid-Island Air Service reopened after being closed during NY on Pause, Justin resumed his flight training, getting the experience he needed to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. Aviation/Private Pilot Training is one of several programs provided by the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The class is offered at the Bixhorn Technical Center in Bellport, NY.

“Justin has been determined to succeed since his first day of formal instruction in year one,” said Stephen Polis, Aviation/Professional Pilot teacher at Bixhorn Technical Center. “He was focused on getting his Private Pilot Certification, with or without distance learning.”

Justin currently works at Mid-Island Air Service as a line service technician/dispatcher. In the fall, he will be attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with the goal of becoming a professional pilot.
