Islip Career Center recently held Union Day, a career-building, networking, and informational occasion for all students studying the building and automotive trades. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar conceptualized the idea because she wanted to provide a resource for students planning careers in the trades that is similar to high school college fairs. Terhaar partnered with ICC Work Experience Coordinator Laurie Jessen to iron out logistics and Union Day was born.

Student gathering information

Seven trade unions and three industry manufacturers had a presence at the school that day. Representatives met with students, discussed job opportunities and career paths, and answered questions. Some brought job applications and engaged in onsite recruiting for seniors, others provided information concerning dates for hiring events.

“We are trailblazing with this event,” said Jessen. “Next year we are doing it again in a bigger room and we will collaborate with the trade programs from other instructional buildings, some of which are located on other campuses.”
