Students Dig Additional Certifications

Students learning building trades at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) became certified excavators through Call 811’s Dig Safely New York Program. The students were from a range of programs, including first and second year Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Special Career Education HVAC, Adult Education HVAC, Electrical Trade and Alternative Energy, and Adult Education Electric. Mike Murtha, of Call 811, visited MTC to provide the training. At the end of the four-hour training, all attendees were recognized for completing the Dig Safely New York Certified Excavator Program, a certification that is valid for five years. This certification teaches students the best way to negotiate around buried utility lines and how to be safe on the worksite – skills that are valuable to employers. MTC is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, which is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The Academy has campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
