Westhampton Beach Learning Center Students "Camp In" At School
Westhampton Beach Learning Center’s (WHBLC) “Camp-in Day” was the culmination of a summer program full of fun and learning. Tents and a faux campfire were set up in the gymnasium, along with camping activities like fishing and cornhole. Students toured a virtual campground on iPads and created a paper s'mores craft.
“Camp-in Day” is a day of fun for the students and staff, and we can also see how they are using the skills they are learning in the classrooms,” said WHBLC Teaching Assistant Cinthia Weitz who helped organize the event. “For example, the students are using their eye-hand coordination skills at the fishing station.” Rotation through the stations was planned very carefully so all the students had the opportunity to participate in the various activities.
WHBLC’s summer program encourages students to practice the skills they have learned throughout the entire school year. Students participated in creative lessons and projects, which had students focusing on core curriculum in addition to soft skills (communication, interacting with others), life skills (following directions, making decisions), and honing fine motor skills. Westhampton Beach Learning Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs. The summer program runs for approximately six weeks each summer.
