Summer Learning Shines in Our Classrooms

ESBOCES students are staying engaged all year long

For ESBOCES’ Special Education Department, learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends. For many students, year-round instruction is essential to maintain the progress they’ve made during the school year. Without continued support, some may experience substantial regression. They can lose ground in important areas like academics, communication, behavior, and daily living skills. To keep that momentum going, students stay engaged throughout the summer with fun, hands-on activities that encourage growth and build skills in creative, meaningful ways.

At Sayville Elementary School, students went “camping” right inside their classrooms. Tents, pretend campfires, and cozy reading spaces set the scene for a week of themed learning. Students followed directions to make their own s’mores, practiced communication through group activities, and explored the outdoors from the comfort of their classrooms.

Masera Middle School brought the same spirit of adventure to its own indoor camping week, where students enjoyed nature-inspired projects while enhancing their social skills in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Sayville Elementary students also had the chance to mix learning with a sweet treat, baking cookies decorated with ocean-themed designs. Activities like this support sensory development and taste great too!

Meanwhile, students at Brookhaven Learning Center enjoyed a surprise visit from Santa Claus during their “Christmas in July” celebration. Santa stopped by to chat, pose for photos, and hand out candy canes and ices, bringing joy and a bit of holiday magic to a hot summer day.

These creative experiences show that summer at ESBOCES is more than a break, it’s a chance to keep students engaged, supported, and learning in ways that are not only fun, but truly impactful.
