Poetry Corner Event Debuts at Bellport Academic

Café atmosphere brings genre to a new level

Bellport Academic Center recently held its first Poetry Corner Event which was an enormous success. The English Department launched this event as an opportunity for students to showcase their original poetry works after studying the genre in class.

English Department staff and students worked together to transform the school multipurpose room into a cozy, coffee shop-style lounge. The walls were covered with students’ poetry and visual displays connected to their pieces. There was even a mural-sized paper backdrop that resembled an open brick-face wall and a stand microphone to complete the mood.

At the event, students recited or performed their poems for classmates while smooth jazz music played in the background. They used different styles of poetry, which they learned about in class, such as haiku, free verse, limerick, and ballad.

Said English Teacher Chad Erlitz, “Hosting this event with all the details, such as making over the multipurpose room and incorporating snacks and music, created an exciting atmosphere where our students couldn’t wait to share their poetry writing talents with their teachers and peers.”
