Partners in Science 2023

Partners in Science 2023

The Partners in Science Program, a collaboration between ESBOCES School Library System and the Brookhaven National Laboratory, was back this year for the first time since 2019. While the program has been in existence for over 20 years, it has not run for the past two years because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Partners in Science grants access to research materials in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s scientific database to select high school students who are working on approved science projects. The program encourages students to excel in science and mathematics through the use of reference and research materials not readily available in school or public library collections. For this year’s program, librarians and scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratory presented to students at the ESBOCES School Library System building in Bellport.

Five school districts—Bay Shore UFSD, Center Moriches UFSD, Shoreham-Wading River CSD, Westhampton Beach UFSD, and Hampton Bays UFSD, participated in this year’s modified program. Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES administrative coordinator for the School Library System, said, “We are so glad to have Partners in Science back in action again, making it possible for science students to meet and engage with scientists from one of the world’s most high-profile labs, and hopefully inspiring them to pursue careers in the industry.”

The School Library System at Eastern Suffolk BOCES includes 51 school districts, 230 public school library media centers, nine nonpublic school library media centers, for a total of 239. The School Library System provides a variety of resources for the school library and the school librarian. Resources available from the School Library System include databases and regional resource sharing for all member libraries.
