ESBOCES collaborates with Stony Brook University on summer conference for educators
More than 50 educators from across the country came together on July 19 and 20, 2023, for the Long Island Summer Equity Institute/Diversity Equity Inclusivity Certificate Program at Stony Brook University. The program was a grant-funded collaboration between ESBOCES DEI Department, Stony Brook University, and Nothing But Education Global Partnership Consulting.
The keynote speaker was author, professor, and advocate Dr. Bettina Love who discussed what it means to be an abolitionist educator. Workshop sessions included Developing Equitable Hiring Practices, What Educators Need to Know about Title IX, and Creating a Culture of Dignity Through Leadership. Practical strategies on how educators can be inclusive of their communities to move equitable practices forward were provided. A panel discussion about partnering with district stakeholders to grow literacy took place, and equity action plan coaching was provided for the 2023-2024 school year.
Participants learned in cohorts, built relationships, and had braving conversations. In order to receive their DEI Certificates, they will complete additional Continuing Teacher and Leader Education credit requirements.
