LI Academy Launches Two New In-District Programs
Carpentry at Mattituck-Cutchogue and CMA at Southampton kickoff
The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology announces the launch of two new in-district career and technical education programs (CTE).
Partnerships between ESBOCES and the Mattituck-Cutchogue and the Southampton school districts resulted in the collaborative launch of both a Carpentry/Residential Construction and Home Improvement, and the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Programs.
The Carpentry Program is housed within a newly renovated workshop in the Mattituck-Cutchogue High School, and the CMA Program is located at the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Both programs are taught by industry professionals and will utilize the Academy’s extensive business and industry network to provide students with internships, class trips, professional demonstrations, and more. By offering the CMA program at the hospital, students have the advantage of on-site learning led by experienced instructors.
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held for both programs at the hospital and the workshop on Monday and Tuesday, October 28 and 29, respectively.
The half-day programs are open to high school juniors and seniors within both districts, as well as surrounding ones. The proximity to these new North and South Fork programs eliminates the long commute to Academy campuses in Riverhead and Bellport, and provides access to expert, hands-on skills development and technical training to benefit students in and around the East End who are interested in careers in carpentry and construction, and the healthcare system.
Said Leah Arnold, director of career, technical and adult education, “This locally-based training will create a regional student-to-industry pipeline to fill the employment gap for East End businesses in need of skilled carpenters, as well as the constant demand for medical professionals.”
The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, referred to as the Academy, is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has locations in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
