Jefferson Middle School Launches Personal Enhancement Program

Students show off creativity and explore self-care

Students at Jefferson Middle School (JMS) are embracing creativity and personal growth through the school’s newest offering — the Personal Enhancement Program. Designed to help students develop confidence and self-expression, the program combines hands-on lessons in beauty, fashion, and wellness to encourage them to take pride in both their appearance and individuality.

Under the direction of Cosmetology Teacher Staci Palazzo and Teaching Assistant Janine Reh, students are learning practical skills that they can take with them outside of school. The course introduces topics such as personal hygiene, hairstyling, color theory, and makeup application — all while reinforcing the importance of self-care and positive self-image.

“We started the year focusing on basic hygiene and self-care techniques, leading into practical hairstyling that students could do for themselves or family members,” said Palazzo. “We then moved into color theory and explored makeup, special effects makeup for Halloween, and even nail and skin care. There’s so much to cover, and the kids have fun being hands-on at the styling stations. They don’t even realize how much they’re learning and expressing!”

In October, Palazzo invited all JMS staff to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by receiving pink hair extensions or tinsel. Students also joined in by creating colorful hairstyles during School Spirit Week’s Crazy Hair Day, bringing a burst of color and school pride to the halls of JMS.

“These experiences not only teach valuable skills but also encourage students to express themselves creatively and feel confident in who they are,” Palazzo added. “Whether they’re interested in becoming hairstylists, makeup artists, or simply want to learn how to take care of themselves, this class gives them a space to shine.”
