Enrichment Program Builds Lifelong Skills Through Hands-On Learning

Project-based activities and financial literacy prepared students for success beyond the classroom

ESBOCES' Summer Enrichment Program showed that learning didn't have to end when the school year did. Across enrichment sites in Bay Shore, Bayport Blue-Point, Comsewogue and Central Islip, students in grades K-9 strengthened their academic skills through engaging lessons while also enjoying traditional summer activities. Students in grades 10-12 also developed leadership and workplace skills through the program's Counselors in Training initiative.

One of the program's most impactful learning experiences was its expanded financial literacy curriculum, which benefited students from first through twelfth grade. Introduced as part of the New York Inspires initiative, the curriculum helped students develop practical life skills alongside their academics. Elementary-aged children learned to identify coins, count money and recognize different forms of payment, while older students explored budgeting, money management and other real-world financial concepts that will serve them well into adulthood.

"Financial literacy is one of the most important life skills we can teach," said Nancy Dowdy-Adams, Assistant Administrative Coordinator for Enrichment Services. "No matter what career path a student chooses, they'll need to know how to manage money as an adult. Whether it's creating a budget, understanding a paycheck, saving for the future or making informed financial decisions, these are skills every student will use throughout their lives. By introducing these concepts early and building on them each year, we're giving students tools they'll carry well beyond the classroom."

The program also reinforced reading skills through guided instruction and immersed students in project-based STEM and literacy activities, including robotics, drone technology, engineering and cooking, helping them remain academically engaged throughout the summer.

When the academic portion of the day concluded, students embraced other activities, field trips, and themed events. It was a summer that successfully blended academics, recreation, and personal growth.
