Creative Roots Bring Fairy Gardens to Life

Horticulture students brought imagination, planning, and hands-on learning to life

Throughout January, Special Career Education students in the Horticulture program at Islip Career Center designed and built creative “Fairy Gardens” under the guidance of teachers Jacqueline Simoncini-Flamio and Danielle Merrill. The project helped students learn essential garden planning skills, including drawing blueprints and ensuring their structures were built to last in the cold winter months.

Students were encouraged to think creatively by choosing themes and deciding which elements would bring their ideas to life. Each garden was required to include at least one structure, one piece of furniture, a pathway, and a live plant, while the remaining details were left to the students’ imagination. Using materials such as stones, recycled milk cartons, popsicle sticks, and other everyday items, students transformed simple supplies into imaginative miniature landscapes.

Many gardens reflected students’ personal interests and favorite hobbies. Themes ranged from a music stage inspired by a love of singing to a Lululemon-inspired design, a SpongeBob SquarePants-themed garden, and even a garden modeled after an Applebee’s restaurant.

By providing clear guidelines while allowing creative freedom, Ms. Simoncini-Flamio and Ms. Merrill helped students express themselves, build confidence, and take pride in their finished fairy gardens, each one as unique as its creator.
