Carpentry students raise wall of three-bedroom ranch

Assignment features real-world skills training

The carpentry student in Andrew Lucas’ class at Bixhorn Tech worked together to raise an 8’x47’ wall of the house they are building.

Students worked as a crew and not individually to get that wall in place. Once the wall was off the floor and right side up, select students determined if it was plumb (straight) and then secured it to the flooring system, which they also built. “Constructing a house from top to bottom is one of the assignments students undertake as they learn the trade,” said Lucas.

The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, referred to as the Academy, is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has locations in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Bixhorn Tech is located on the Bellport campus.
