Braiding, a Business-building Staple in Cosmetology Classes

Prom and wedding updos incorporate braids into elegant styles

One of the hottest looks in updos today for proms and weddings involves incorporating braids into elegant styles. Jamie Palermo’s Introduction to Cosmetology students at Islip Career Center are becoming proficient in at least eight different styles of braids. These include classics such as Dutch and French braids, as well as the stylish waterfall and drape braids.

In addition to studying the cultural significance of braids, students learn and practice the

various techniques of two- and three-stranded braids, and then move on to incorporate them into ordinary buns, twists and updos to elevate styles for special occasions.

Said Palermo, “Braids allow for a range of intricate designs and the only limitation is the skill and imagination of the hairstylist, making them ideal for casual and formal occasions. The more techniques my students master, the more appeal they have for potential employers and future clients.”

Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides skills training to students with special education needs. This training may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries.
