Becoming Community Leaders

Annual training sessions through L.I. RBERN prepare students for a statewide mock assembly

Through the Long Island Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (L.I. RBERN), administered by ESBOCES, students from across Long Island are preparing for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRYLI) by developing leadership skills and gaining a deeper understanding of the legislative process. Each year, students take part in structured training sessions designed to help them analyze public policy, practice parliamentary procedure, and prepare to debate current bills during a statewide mock assembly in Albany this March.

Through debates and legislative simulations, students strengthen communication, critical thinking, public speaking, and civic awareness while building the confidence to advocate for issues that matter to them. These experiences help them recognize the value of their perspectives and the influence they can have as emerging young leaders.

A recent training session included a visit from New York State Assemblyman and Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos, a long-time supporter of PRYLI who has attended local trainings for more than 15 years. Ramos spoke with students about leadership, advocacy, and the importance of using their voices to represent their communities.

“PRYLI gives students meaningful opportunities to develop leadership skills and understand their role in the democratic process,” said Christa Stevenson, Executive Director of the L.I. RBERN. “These experiences help students gain the confidence and knowledge needed to make meaningful change.”
