Speech at the Beach

Speech at the Beach

During the last week of May, WHBLC hosted a memorable and engaging event called Speech at the Beach, which took place right on our campus. This exciting two-day experience was thoughtfully planned, organized, and facilitated by our dedicated WHBLC Related Service Staff. They worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every detail was in place, from the scheduling to the hands-on setup of each activity station. The event was spread out across various locations throughout the campus, transforming familiar spaces into creative, interactive zones designed for fun and learning.

In order to give all of our students the opportunity to participate, each classroom was scheduled for a designated time slot to visit and explore all that the event had to offer. At each location, multiple stations were set up to engage students in a variety of multisensory activities. These stations included craft projects, gross motor challenges, fine motor skill tasks, and sensory experiences, all tailored to support the developmental needs of our students. The thoughtful design of each station ensured that our students could enjoy and benefit from the activities, while also having fun in a safe and supportive environment.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible Related Service Staff for making this event such a success. Their creativity, effort, and use of both time and resources helped bring joy and meaningful engagement to our students. The success of Speech at the Beach reflects their commitment to enhancing student experiences beyond the classroom and providing opportunities that support growth through hands-on, play-based learning.

It is incredibly important for our students to participate in events like Speech at the Beach because these experiences provide meaningful opportunities for hands-on learning in a fun, low-pressure environment. The event is carefully designed to engage students through multisensory stations, which help reinforce skills related to communication, fine and gross motor development, and sensory integration. By participating in these interactive activities, students can practice important developmental skills in ways that feel more like play than structured therapy. This not only helps solidify their learning but also boosts their confidence in applying those skills outside of the classroom setting.

In addition to the academic and physical benefits, Speech at the Beach supports the social development of our students by encouraging peer interaction, turn-taking, cooperative play, and shared experiences. Students move through the event together with their classmates, providing them with opportunities to observe and model social behaviors in a supportive environment. Activities such as crafts and games invite verbal and nonverbal communication, helping students build stronger connections with one another. For many of our students, these moments of interaction are key stepping stones toward forming friendships and developing more advanced social skills.

The social-emotional advantages of events like Speech at the Beach are just as significant as the academic and developmental gains. Participating in a special event gives our students a sense of belonging and pride, as they are included in something fun and out of the ordinary. The joy and excitement they experience contribute to a positive WHBLC memory and an increased sense of self-worth. By engaging in activities that are both enjoyable and educational, our students begin to associate learning with positive emotions, which can improve their overall attitude toward school and reduce anxiety. These emotional connections help support their long-term growth and well-being, making events like this an essential part of their educational experience.
