Snowboarding Lessons

Snowboarding Lessons

This winter, students at the Islip Academic Center had the chance to experience snowboarding, something completely different during Physical Education class.

Physical Education teachers Blake Faherty and Chris Poplaski, along with teacher assistant Mark Buchalski, introduced a snowboarding unit. The goal was simple but meaningful, to give students exposure to a sport they likely would not have access to on their own.

Getting the unit off the ground took effort. Mr. Faherty, Mr. Poplaski, and Mr. Buchalski worked together to gather and provide equipment and plan lessons that were both safe and accessible for the students. Once everything was in place, they took advantage of a unique feature right outside their gym, a small slope that turned out to be the perfect learning environment.

With several snowstorms this winter, the timing could not have been better. Students were able to participate in multiple outdoor lessons, where they learned the basics of balance, stance, and control. Over time, many of them became more confident and willing to challenge themselves.

At the end of the unit, a group of students who showed interest and improvement were selected for a trip to Islip Grange Park. There, they were able to ride on a larger slope and apply the skills they had been building during class.

For many of the students, this experience went beyond Physical Education. It gave them a chance to try something new, step outside of their comfort zone, and feel a sense of accomplishment. Moments like this are what make programs like this meaningful, not just for skill development
