Safety Town

Learning to carefully cross the street is an important life skill. Jean Warm, physical education teacher used a Bixhorn Mini-Grant to create Safety Town to teach students how to do it correctly. The school staff fabricated a cardboard village filled with shops and businesses in the school gymnasium where Warm outlined a pedestrian crosswalk and traffic lane for students on scooters who acted as motorists. Carpentry and Trade Electric students at Bixhorn Tech built a crosswalk signal box indicating walk or don’t walk, which Warm and fellow gym teacher Ron Mauri used to help participants practice crossing the street at the correct time.
