Pen pals from SES

Pen pals from SES

On December 1st, Ms. Church's class from Sayville Elementary School (SES) visited their pen pals at Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC). SES visited Ms. Alymer’s/Allen’s class accompanied by speech teachers, Sue Terrone and Regina Cestari. Preparations for this adventure began with the social story, "What is a Pen Pal?" The students first heard this story weeks ago and have since been preparing by writing letters to their pen pals. Students from SES baked a cake to bring to their new friends at BLC. The students labeled the ingredients, sequenced the steps, matched core and fringe words, and helped to clean up.

Upon arrival at BLC, Sayville students were welcomed by the students holding a handmade sign. Students were greeted with smiles and hugs as they came off the bus.

The meet and greet continued by exchanging letters and completing a photo puzzle to help students figure out who their pen pal was. They celebrated by eating bagels, cake, doughnuts, and fruit. One student, Katie, wanted to hear her favorite song so the staff played it on the smartboard and an impromptu dance party ensued! The students got up and danced, smiled, and clapped!

The trip ended by shopping in the school store in which students shopped for their favorite snacks and purchased them by handing money to the student worker. It was an AWESOME trip!
