March Madness

March Madness

The BLC speech department hosted a building wide competition for staff members to learn about communication devices. Over 39 teams competed with over 100 participants, to learn how to use and model core boards on student communication devices.

In round one of the competition, each team worked to learn how to facilitate language using one of their students devices. The top player on each team went on to represent their classroom. In round 2, players competed in a timed competition with the same board to create 2 or more word phrases. The highest scores went on to round 3, where they received a new core board, and required to create longer phrases. From that round, the top 4 teams were chosen: Mr. JP and the Pink Pony Club, Ms. Diana and the DJ Grandmaster Funky Bunch, Ms. Julia and the Triple Threat, and Ms. Debbie and the Lawnmower Guys.

The last round, The Final Four, took place on April 1st and was streamed for the whole school to watch. Several classes were invited to gather in the gym and cheer on their favorite contestants, hosted by Dylan Boyle and Daniel Jones. BLC retirees, Ms. Sue Gargan, Ms. Bobbi Kempf, and Ms. Ann Marie Furman were invited to judge the competition. The BLC cheerleaders showed their support for AAC by delivering some amazing cheers!  Student Edgar Cruz, sang the National Anthem and there was even a special appearance by the new BLC mascot, the wolf!

During the game, the teams played Jeopardy and answered questions using communication devices.

The competition was close, and all players did an amazing job!! In the end, Mr. JP and the Pink Pony Club took home the prize, a catered lunch for the staff on his team. This event and prizes were sponsored by the BLC Meh initiative. Remember: It’s okay to have a Meh day.
