Hispanic Heritage Month 2025

Hispanic Heritage Month 2025

The bilingual speech therapist, Gina Salemi of Brookhaven Learning Center, developed an inclusive lesson presentation for Hispanic Heritage Month that celebrated diversity among students. As part of the project, students in Holly Warshaw’s class were given the choice to either create a representation of their family's native county or research a prominent Hispanic figure.

Students created posters to showcase their projects. The speech therapist, Kim Sheehan, assisted by practicing with students in the class and programming different modes of communication such as AAC Devices, including one student’s eye gaze system. This allowed for all students to participate and present their projects in a way that was suited to their communicative ability.

Additionally, the team collaborated with families of several students. Families sent in pictures of past vacations to Hispanic countries for students to share as part of their presentations. Parents also sent in attire for students to wear representing their native country. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Brookhaven Learning Center, fostering student pride and inclusion.
