STEAM Tower Activity

At Bellport Academic Center, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where collaboration, cultural awareness, and positive learning thrive. During our 2nd STEAM event of the year, BAC classrooms transformed into high-stakes construction zones as students tackled the Marshmallow Tower Challenge. Tasked with a limited supply of dry spaghetti and mini marshmallows, classroom teams had to navigate the delicate balance of structural integrity and gravitational force to build the tallest freestanding structure.

The competition reached a fever pitch as classes went head-to-head, utilizing triangulation and truss patterns to distribute compressive and tensile stresses throughout their fragile frameworks. While many designs succumbed to structural failure under the weight of their own ambition, the winning teams succeeded by lowering their center of mass and reinforcing the base to withstand lateral forces. This exercise wasn't just about height; it was a masterclass in iterative design, collaborative problem-solving, and the practical application of Newtonian mechanics.
