Interview with a Chief Kicking Bear from the Paugusset Nation

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the students in Mrs. Rotella’s class at Bellport Academic Center had the opportunity to interview one of our student’s uncle,  War Chief Kicking Bear from the Golden Hill Paugusset Nation, through Zoom.  He appeared from his home in Connecticut wearing his traditional ceremonial regalia.  The students asked him questions ranging from the history behind the name of his tribe to how he earned his native name. He told the students that some names are given at birth and others are given at sacred naming ceremonies.  He shared with the students the purpose of a pow wow, how he upholds his cultural beliefs and language for future generations, and how non-tribal people can learn from his culture.  He emphasized the importance of harmony and balance with nature.  Chief Kicking Bear spoke of his ancestors, his father Moonface Bear, and his Grandfather Chief Big Eagle and how the next generation is taught through stories and sacred teachings as well as through essential objects.  The students enjoyed this unique opportunity culminating a month-long study of Native American history.
