El Dia de Los Muertos Celebration at BAC

El Dia de Los Muertos Celebration at BAC

In Ms. DeAlmeida's Spanish class, students at Bellport Academic Center proudly celebrated El Día de Los Muertos with a fun and creative cultural experience that brought learning to life! Students explored this beloved Mexican tradition by designing personal “Ofrendas” — colorful altars honoring loved ones. Through hands-on activities, students identified, described, and explained the practices, products, and cultural perspectives behind this important celebration, deepening their understanding of how cultures honor family and memory in meaningful ways.

During the project, students showcased their creativity and visual-spatial skills by carefully crafting each “Ofrenda,” incorporating traditional symbols such as marigolds, candles, photos, papel picado and favorite foods. They also practiced Linguistic Expression as they presented their creations to classmates, connecting art, language, and culture. Guided by the Essential Question — “How do cultural traditions help us honor loved ones and express our memories creatively?” — students demonstrated respect, empathy, and appreciation for cultural diversity while celebrating the beauty of remembrance.
