BAC Cinco De Mayo Historical Project and Celebration

Bellport Academic Center came alive on May 5th as students and staff joined together to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a cultural holiday commemorating the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla. Ms. DeAlmeida and Ms. Heredia created this event which focused on honoring Mexican heritage through a range of student-led, inclusive, and educational activities that fostered awareness and appreciation for diverse cultures.

The celebration transformed room 605 into a festive environment featuring colorful "papel picado" decorations, traditional music, and a showcase of Mexican culture. Students of all backgrounds participated in the event, which was designed to be both educational and inclusive.

Highlights of the event included:
A “Taste of Mexico” station, offering samples of culturally significant foods like tacos, flautas, tamales, guacamole, nachos, horchata among other dishes.
Interactive Spanish language sing-along, where students selected and presented their favorite folk songs.
A Mariachi photo booth when students connected with each other and created memorable experiences.
A collaborative history timeline project, where students researched key political, military figures involved in the Guerra de Puebla and created fake social media profiles using the Fakebook application to showcase historical perspectives, motivations, alliances, and actions during the conflict.

“We wanted this celebration to go beyond decorations and music. It was about learning, sharing, and building cultural bridges,” said Ms. DeAlmeida, Spanish teacher at BAC. “Prior to this celebration our students explored different aspects of Mexican culture, including the music, food, clothing, and important landmarks, which provide them with the opportunity to learn and respect other cultures.”
