This course is designed to prepare students to perform both clinical and administrative duties associated with the veterinary field. Students will have the opportunity to combine theory with hands-on applications to prepare them for success in the field. The course of study includes: comparative anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures and techniques, introduction to dentistry and radiology, veterinary terminology, handling and restraining techniques, surgical preparation, post-operative care, aseptic techniques, animal first aid, and small and large animal nursing. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements will be discussed. Students will also be introduced to holistic methods such as animal nutrition and preventative and alternative medicine. An additional 20-hour off campus clinical experience is a course requirement. The objective of the clinical experience is to complement classroom activities and give students the opportunity to gain experience in the field. This course is designed for individuals who are interested in working with and caring for a variety of small animals. It combines theory and hands-on applications that will prepare the student to work in the veterinary field. Students will learn basic animal care, handling and restraining techniques, external anatomy, parasitology, controlling infection, laboratory skills, animal nutrition, animal first aid, an introduction to alternative and preventative medicine and care of small and exotic animals. Prerequisite: ASC1020 Dog Grooming This course is designed for the student who would like to obtain their Suffolk County Dog Grooming License. The course will expand upon your knowledge of dog grooming as it applies to the many different breeds. Students will gain the practical hands-on experience necessary for them to master the techniques of scissoring, clipping and thinning out fur or hair. A 30-hour internship is necessary for the completion of this course.
Animal First Aid- 7 Classes
This course is designed for students interested in learning first aid techniques for animals. Topics to be covered include: restraining techniques, types of wounds and proper care, bandaging, vital signs, symptoms of/and treatment for shock, allergic reactions, and birthing emergencies. This course is recommended for groomers, individuals considering a career involving animals or for the individual with animals of their own. Canine Basic Obedience Training- Level 1 - 8 Classes
Prerequisite: Dogs must be at least 6 months old and current on their immunizations. Owners will need to provide proof of inoculations. It is never too late to start training your dog to be a more obedient member of your pack. This course is designed to teach dogs basic obedience through the use of positive reinforcement. Lessons include sit, stay, down, leave it, take it, come and loose leash walking. Problem behaviors will be discussed. If you would like an additional person to attend with you and your dog, there will be an additional $50 fee.
