CAC students not planning on attending college learn career skills for future jobs.
At the Centereach Academic Center (CAC), seniors are designing and building homes the size of large dollhouses. Technology/Industrial Arts teacher Ramesh Nathai encouraged the students to brainstorm about house styles and energy efficiency, sketch designs on chalkboards, and work collaboratively on the construction process. Structural and safety procedures are adhered to as per industry rules.“Most of these students have made the decision not to go to college so these experiences can be carried into future careers in the academic, technical, or scientific arenas,” said the Eastern Suffolk BOCES teacher. Designed to expose classes to the industrial arts industries, the projects are a balance of hands-on construction and building theory including all phases of residential construction especially form work, framing, roofing, and exterior and interior finish. Instruction also includes the proper use and care of machine tools. Job shadowing is a structured, unpaid work-based learning experience that allows students to follow employees during specific activities to gain a greater awareness of the scope of the profession.Supervised by Mr. Nathai, the students took specific assignments such as building and inserting windows and doors, stairs, home awnings, and roofing. “They became motivated,” the teacher added, “wanting to see the projects completed.”
