Student Assistance Service - Youth Empowerment
Research shows that placing youth in positions of leadership reinforces healthy decision-making, including the decision not to use tobacco products. The activities of the initiative include sponsoring youth leadership conferences and other activities that create opportunities for young people to influence their peers to choose a healthy lifestyle.
Conferences and trainings are held throughout the school year. As with all aspects of this initiative, there is no cost to school districts to attend.
Past Conference Themes include:
2008-09 “The Impact of Technology on Today’s Youth”
2007-08 “Character: It Becomes You” Character Education in Action
2006-07 “Pay It Forward” Character Education in Action
2005-06 “Risky Business” Addressing the Risky Health Behaviors Adolescents Face
2004-05 “Bullying, Hazing And Sexual Harassment”
Annual “Teens as Teachers” trainings are held in two areas: “Tobacco Awareness” and “Sun Safety.” TEENS AS TEACHERS enlists secondary level students to teach younger children about a healthier lifestyle. The younger children are deeply impressed when taught by their teen-aged role models, and the teens receive a valuable educational experience. All of this is accomplished without being “taught” by adults in the traditional sense.
