SAS Mission Statement

It is our belief that learning improves when we help people develop skills, attitudes, and values necessary to manage life tasks, form relationships and adapt to the demands of today’s society.

About SAS

The Student Assistance Service (SAS) is a prevention and early intervention program whose primary goal is to prevent substance abuse among students K-12. Founded in 1988 as a companion program to the BOCES Employee Assistance Program (EAP), the SAS provides professionally trained counselors who are placed in districts to implement prevention programs including universal, selected, and indicated approaches.

Universal approaches include such things as classroom education series, assemblies, peer leadership/educator programs, and building-wide awareness programs. Early intervention services include selected and indicated approaches. These would include assessment, referral, and groups that the counselor would run within the context of the school day being sure as to not interfere with important academic time.

Students are identified for referral in a number of ways including administrative, teacher, parent, peer, or self-referral. A student can see a counselor for any reason but generally come as a result of a situation, behavioral issue, or other concern that could be interfering in their ability to maintain attention or level of achievement in their academic or social and emotional life.
