ESBOCES Offers Assistance to Veterans

8-16-2012

Among the agency's missions is helping veterans and returning troops enhance their skills for employment.

The Long Island Veterans Open House sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES welcomed veterans and returning troops interested in enhancing their skills, changing careers, and seeking education-funding solutions. On hand to assist were representatives of the U.S. Congress, Islip Town, Suffolk Sheriff’s Department, Department of Labor, Teachers Federal Credit Union, and others. Additionally, veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War were on hand to speak. A financial officer attended to discuss available federal and state funds and assist in navigating the process. For example, the Post 9/11 GI Bill provides education benefits to veterans seeking training and employment.

ESBOCES day and evening courses are available in automotive; aviation; building trades; computer repair; health-related occupations; paralegal; air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration; and others. In addition to the initial presentation and meet and greet at the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center (MTC), in Oakdale, career displays and brochures were available in an adjoining room.

ESBOCES teacher Nick DeBlanco speaks about building trade professions, including plumbing, construction, and green technology. “We will train you like you’ve never been trained before,” he said, adding that the courses are aligned with national standards for licensing.

Open House coordinator and ESBOCES Divisional Administrator of Career, Technical and Adult Education Barbara Egloff commented, “We believe it’s important to give back to the men and women who served this country, so we are planning more events and free services.”
