ESL and Bilingual Programs
Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (BETAC)
BETAC provides technical assistance and services, free of charge, to 69
school districts in Suffolk county serving limited English proficient
students. These services include assistance in: program planning and implementation,
applying for federal and state funds, current laws and regulations impacting
LEP students, staff development courses, conferences, curriculum development,
materials and resource center, parent activities and other efforts aimed
at building capacity for local school districts to effectively serve the
limited English proficient population.
2008 TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE
UPDATE
The Suffolk BETAC, in collaboration with the Nassau BOCES BETAC
and NYSABE, is very pleased to announce that the 2008 Long Island
Teachers’ Institute on March 13, 2007 has reached maximum
capacity! As a result, registrations received after the deadline
(March 7, 2008) will no longer be accepted. Please also note that
there will be no on-site registration on the day of the event.
As always, we are very grateful for your tremendous support of
this important event, and for your dedication to improving the
education of LEP/ELLs across Long Island. Thank you!

Intensive Teacher Institute
in Bilingual Education & English as a Second Language (ITI-BE)
The New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education
created the ITI-BE to address the shortage of certified bilingual and
English as a second language (ESL) teachers in New York. This state-funded
program provides tuition assistance for twelve credits of specialized
coursework and facilitates the certification process for bilingual or
ESL general education teachers who are currently working in New York public
schools. The ITI Program, which is housed at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, collaborates
with school districts and institutions of higher education (IHEs) throughout

(ITI-BSE)
The New York State Education Department Office of Vocational and Educational
Services for Individuals with Disabilities created the ITI-BSE to address
the shortage of certified bilingual and English as a second language (ESL)
special education teachers, bilingual teachers of the speech and hearing
handicapped, and bilingual pupil personnel professionals. This state-funded
program provides tuition assistance for fifteen credits of specialized
coursework and facilitates the certification process for these professionals
who are currently working in New York public schools or approved preschools.
The ITI-BSE Program, which is housed at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, collaborates
with school districts, preschools and institutions of higher education

Title III Consortium - Language Instruction for Limited English
Proficient and Immigrant Students
The Consortium, comprised of 28 school districts in Suffolk County, aims
to help LEP students meet the New York State learning standards through
the integration of instructional technology. Participating districts receive
equipment, educational software, subscriptions to online resources and
the professional development needed to successfully incorporate instructional
technology into classrooms serving LEP students.
