The Star
The monthly Arts-In-Education Newsletter, The Star, features the Top Ten AIE programs for the month as well detailing the many programs taking place in each of your districts. It profiles one or more programs and events and then informs you of meetings and more.

School Year 2007/2008

  • June 2008 - News on the NYSED Regent Standards Review Forums held throughout the State in May from the viewpoint of arts integration; Uncovering myths regarding NCLB; Digital Arts across the curriculum; Arts and Literacy; and the top 10 AIE programs of the 2007-08 school year.

  • May 2008 - This issue is chock full of reviews of Arts in Ed events including the LI Media Arts Show and the Common Ground Conference. It also introduces several NYS important new people in arts education including Executive Director of NYSCA, Heather Hitchens, and NYSED Visual Arts Program Associate Leslie Yolen. Don’t miss “The Next Step: Rallying Public Support for Arts Ed” and another installment from guest reporter, Ellen Rappaport, on books for students under “Page Turners.”

  • April 2008 - Remember that all Contract Requests for 2007-08 programs must be received by April 30th. After that date, the ES BOCES Business Office will not accept new purchase orders. And make sure to have all your signed invoices for 07-08 in our office by June 30. Thanks for your cooperation.In this month’s Star Newsletter, hear about the support the arts have in NYS from Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. Note the article from the American Association of School Administrators on Creative Learning for Tomorrow’s Innovators. Read about this year’s Student Dance Conference.

  • March 2008 - Learn about the work the statewide BOCES Arts in Education Network is trying to accomplish with NYS Education Department. Read the Arts Education and Arts-in-Education issues shared with the Regents and with Sr. Deputy Commission of Education, Johanna Duncan-Poitier. Read about the survey on the impact of Academic Intervention Services on music education in NYS. Updates on Scholar-Artist Award, the 2008 Embracing Our Differences Art show and the SCALA All-County Senior Art Show.
  • February 2008 - Read about the Program Profiles for new and upcoming programs seen at the International Performing Arts for Youth (IPAY) showcase held in Tampa during January. Includes highlights from Julie Andrews’ and Emma Walton’s keynotes. Also learn about the NYS Alliance for Arts Education’s Arts in Education conference held in the Hudson Valley region. A similar regional event is coming to Long Island on May 7.

  • January 2008 - So many programs for you to see that you and your neighboring districts are participating in. But have you thought about residencies – sustained learning opportunities for your students? Or Partnerships? NYS Council on the Arts is providing Suffolk with opportunities to learn about the value as well as funding opportunities. Read about these and other programs and research on the value of arts (and arts-in-) education.
  • December 2007 - See the diversity of programs districts are bringing in for the holiday season. Read about hearing student voices through High School programs like “History of the Word.” Advocate for the Museum and Cultural Arts Education Act that is on the floor of the NYS Legislature. Also, Save the Date for Jan. 17th half day workshop with NYS Council on the Arts (NYSCA)on developing arts partnerships between schools and arts organizations that might then be eligible for significant and long term NYSCA funding; and for those of you with sequential Dance Programs, Save March 3 for the Biennial Student Dance Conference. Encourage your PE educators who teach dance to come for the PD that will be offered.
  • November 2007 - Read about the LI Symposium for Arts Administrators, about the statewide BOCES AIE Coordinators meeting in Albany. Learn about the Journey program offered by the Huntington Arts Council. Also see “Page Turners” for books related to the Arts by Bank Street Book member, Ellen Rappaport.

  • October 2007 - Read about the September Advisory Council meeting. This includes grant information and literacy initiatives including the Visual Literacy Teacher Institute beginning Nov. 29th. Also read about the programs Heckscher Museum is offering in schools this year while they are undergoing renovations.


  • September 2007 - Find new information on Arts in Ed Contract Request and Evaluation forms. Read about the grant initiatives for the 2007-08 school year.
