Licensed Practical Nursing Program  




The Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing, sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES, is located at Brookhaven Technical Center in Bellport and the New York Institute of Technology, Kennedy Hall in Central Islip.

A Licensed Practical Nurse performs tasks and responsibilities that include administering medication and treatment within the framework of case findings, health teaching, health counseling and provision and restorative care under the direction of a physician, dentist or registered nurse.

Licensed Practical Nurses practice in a variety of settings including hospitals, outpatient centers, long term care facilities, occupational health centers and home care.

Successful completion of this program entitles one to apply to take the New York State Licensing Examination.

The Eastern Suffolk BOCES School of Practical Nursing offers the following programs each September:
  • An 11-month, full-time day program which meets September through August, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • A 17-month part-time evening program which meets September through June, M-Th from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.AND the following September through March, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • A part-time day program is available to seniors enrolled in the high schools of the first supervisory district which meets September through June, M-F from 7:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. OR 12:00 noon to 2:45 p.m. at the Brookhaven Technical Center in Bellport, NY; AND will meet the following September through March, M-F from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Level II post secondary. Each program encompasses classroom and clinical time. All levels of patient care are covered in our program as well as hands on experience at local health care facilities. The Practical Nursing Program also gives students a solid foundation to pursue advanced college training.

Upon graduation, the student receives a diploma from the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing and is eligible to take the New York State licensing examination.


Application Procedures:

Applicants should call (631) 582-2387, October through December 2011 to be placed on a mailing list to receive an application for the Nurse Entrance Test. Candidates must take and pass the Nurse Entrance Test to be considered for enrollment in the LPN Program. The next Licensed Practical Nursing class is scheduled for September 2012.

Although not required for admission, it is recommended that candidates take the Prep Course for the Nurse Entrance Exam. This course is designed for prospective candidates seeking admission in the Practical Nursing Program. The exam assesses verbal skills (vocabulary and reading comprehension) and math. The completion of this course does not guarantee admission into the Practical Nursing Program. For more information you may call (631) 582-2387.

The Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing is eligible to participate in Title IV financial aid programs. Students attending the Licensed Practical Nursing Program may be eligible for a Pell Grant and/or Direct Loans. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility and receive federal student aid funds.
