The mission of the Westhampton Beach Learning Center, a large and diverse community of multiple, specialty programs, is to provide the highest quality educational programs, services and opportunities designed to allow each student to maximize his/her potential. Individualized quality instruction will ensure that students reach the high expectations of the Federal initiatives and the New York State Learning Standards while preparing them to become viable members of society.

Elementary Autism Program
This program services students with Pervasive Developmental Disorders and Autism. Students range from 5 to 12 years of age. This highly structured program uses Applied Behavioral Analysis and other appropriate supports for students on the Autism Spectrum. Instruction is provided through a structured approach including discrete trial teaching when warranted. Close attention is paid to a student's sensory processing challenges. Communication, social skills training, behavior management and student/family supports are all part of this program.
Program options include 6-1-1's and 8-1-1's
Pre-Vocational Program
This program services students with Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Autism and Developmental Disabilities from 12 to 21 years of age. The program focuses on preparing students for post-secondary outcomes by offering both an academic and a pre-vocational component. While academics are taught in the homeroom, students are provided opportunitites to apply these skills in various simulated work settings on campus. These areas include: Work Preparation Skills, School Store/Supply Room, Office Skills and Independent Living Skills. This program emphasizes social skills necessary for success as an adult, pre-vocational skills and independence. Once students master these skills a half day special education occupational program off campus can be added to their program.

Elementary/Middle School Program
This program services students with behavioral, learning and developmental disabilities. The students range from 5 to 14 years of age.. Our highly structured academic curriculum follows the New York State Learning Standards utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach. Staff members collaborate and design a program based on all aspects of each child's development and specific needs.
Appropriate classroom behavior and socialization skills are supported and addressed through the Building-Wide Behavior Management System, which utilizes a token economy system. This approach helps to modifying behavior through positive reinforcement of appropriate behavior. Our Counseling and Crisis Intervention staff supports student growth, provides intensive supervision and enables students to develop appropriate social skills.

Functional Academics
This program services students with a wide range of developmental disabilities. Students range in age from 5 to 12 years. The focus is on teaching academic skills through functional tasks. The primary goal of the program is to maximize each student's potential and to teach skills that will enable them to become as independent as possible within the confines of his or her disability. Program components include: academics with an emphasis on functional skill development; behavior management; independent living skills or activities of daily living (ADL) which include skills that encourage independence, self-advocacy and social interactions.

Included Transitional Program
This program which is located in the Aquebogue Elementary school services elementary aged students who are acquiring the skills needed to return to their home school districts. WBLC's Included Classes are in the Riverhead School District. Students participate in lunch, recess, school assemblies. As appropriate, students are included in regular education classes such as physical education, art or music.
Program options include: 8-1-1's
12:1:4 Program
This program services students with severe multiple developmental disabilities. Students in this program are generally non-ambulatory and totally dependent on adults for daily living skills. Students range from 5 to 21 years of age. In the 12:1:4 program a collaborative multidisciplinary team effort is used to provide related services daily within the classroom. This program was created for students who are severely cognitively delayed and functioning at a sensory motor level of development. Instruction emphasizes stimulation and motor development rather than traditional academics.
