Mission Statement
The staff at the Premm Learning Center, a program that serves severely developmentally delayed 5 to 21 year-olds, play an integral part in the lives of the students we teach. We work as a team, in cooperation with the parents, to ensure that each student develops to his/her maximum potential academically, socially and physically and achieves his/her highest level of independence. A multi-modality approach to learning best serves our students, while striving to achieve their goals.
School Profile Summary
The Premm Learning Center is an elementary program facility that serves students ranging in age from 5 - 21 years. The students in attendance have been classified by their CSE as mentally retarded, physically handicapped and/or multiply disabled. The curriculum focus of our program is on pre-academic skills, functional academics, pre-vocational skills and life skills.
The program presently offers two class size configurations, with the most common being a 6:1:1 class. The second class size offering consists of a 12:1:4 class configuration, known as the S.T.A.R.S. (Successful Teaching and Related Services) component. The S.T.A.R.S. component serves students from 5 - 21 years of age who are severely multiply disabled and non-ambulatory. The S.T.A.R.S. classes emphasize a multi-sensory approach to learning with most classroom activities being accomplished with hand-over-hand assistance.
Also under the supervision of the Premm program administration is the Integrated Transitional Program (ITP), located at the Craig B. Gariepy Avenue Kindergarten Center within the East Islip School District. Situated at this site are two 8:1:1 classes for kindergarten to second grade aged students who have been designated appropriate for inclusion into the general education population. The students attending the Gariepy ITP classes are mainstreamed for music, physical education and Spanish classes.
