H.B. Ward Technical and Academic Center
Eastern Suffolk BOCES Career and Technical Education programs provide great opportunities for high school students to get a head start on preparing for a rewarding career and/or college. What follows are detailed course descriptions to help you make the best choice for your future. See your school guidance counselor for enrollment information or e-mail questions to powertosucceed@esboces.org.

The H.B. Ward Technical and Academic Center is an integrated career, technical and academic campus. Our mission is to provide high quality education to a diverse population of secondary and adult students, empowering them to open doors of success in post-secondary education and/or career choices. Programs are structured to provide educational experiences incorporating teamwork, responsibility, discipline, professionalism, leadership, and communication skills in a safe environment conducive to learning. We strive to remain focused on offering quality education for the rapidly changing world of this 21st century.

Career and Technical Education programs are offered to all students in our component high schools, in grades 10, 11, and 12. There are 31 different Career and Technical Education programs offered at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (download the 2008-2009 Secondary Career And Technical Education Course Listing information packet in Adobe Acrobat PDF format), with 18 of those programs available at the HBW campus. All courses are recommended to carry 4 units of graduation credit upon completion. A Certificate of Completion is awarded to each student who achieves a 70 average or better and a 90% or better attendance rate. Many of the courses have been approved by the NYS Ed. Dept. for CTE Technical Endorsement, embedded academic credit, and most have college articulation agreements enabling completers to enter post-secondary programs with college credit from their program at BOCES. Each classroom is furnished with current equipment and technology that students will encounter in the field. A work-site based internship component is available to enhance the training experience. Leadership and enrichment activities include the National Technical Honor Society, SkillsUSA-VICA, and several trade-oriented clubs. Career and Technical Education programs and activities allow students to learn new skills in a "live work" setting, and explore career options while they are still in high school, making them better prepared for post-secondary work or school.

Special Career Education programs provide career and technical education and training to CSE-classified students, 13-21 years of age, from component school districts. Students are recommended for enrollment in this program by the local school district Committee on Special Education. Training in work skills prepares students for entry-level employment, or mainstream placement in more advanced technical training. Students receive additional specialized services designed to meet their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or help them achieve success in their Transitional Plan. Eight different career training areas are offered in small, supportive and structured classes. All students receive career counseling, work-site based internship experience in community businesses, and have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA-VICA leadership and enrichment activities.

Academic Center serves special education and non - CSE "at risk" students in grades 9-12, from component school districts, providing academic instruction that allows each student to work toward a NYS approved Regents Diploma, NYS Equivalency (GED) Diploma, or an IEP Diploma in a program that strives to integrate the student's academic instruction with his or her Career and Technical Education course. A behavioral management approach helps enable student achievement by encouraging the learning and adoption of lifelong habits for success.

Support Services in the areas of career counseling, social work and counseling, job placement, and academic intervention are available to students in all programs at the H.B. Ward Technical and Academic Center.
