Mission Statement
The mission of the Centereach Academic Center is to provide an individualized, structured, standards-based education designed to empower students through academic and social growth and success. As a specialized educational community, we provide innovative educational experiences. We are committed to maintaining a safe and caring environment while preparing our students for the challenges of the future.
School Profile Summary
The Centereach Academic Center serves students 13-21, classified by their CSE as ED, LD, or MD. These students have been unsuccessful in adjusting to other school programs due to behavior problems, often of a violent/aggressive nature. Due to this, all classrooms are arranged with a student/staff ratio of 6:1.
The Centereach Academic Center provides both self-contained and departmentalized classes grouped by grade levels. Many students are prone to acting out behaviors due to a lack of coping skills, including frustration tolerance and anger management. In a highly structured, safe environment, students are given their behavior management needs in conjunction with academic requirements.
Current New York State academic standards are enmeshed in the educational programs received by the students. New York State Regents coursework and assessments are presented to Centereach Academic Center students with intense instructional support, coupled with group and individual counseling services designed to address student goals and completion of their high school education.
Students graduating from the Centereach Academic Center attend college and/or find employment. Guidance services are available for students planning on attending college. In addition, Vocational Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) services are available for students seeking vocational training after graduation.
The Centereach Academic Center interfaces with the community whenever possible, to take advantage of local resources beneficial to students. In order to gain information and support beneficial to the students' success, communication with parents, other Eastern Suffolk BOCES facilities, government agencies, and potential employers occurs daily.
