As both an art and a science, nursing is a vital component of health care teams. Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) is honoring and recognizing its Nurse Educators and School Nurses throughout National Nurse’s Week, May 6-12, by presenting them with lapel buttons proclaiming they are “Kind of a Big Deal.”
There are 21 Nurse Educators in ESBOCES Health Careers Programs who provide instruction in basic nurse assistant theory and in the skills necessary to provide care to patients in health care institutions and agencies. Health Careers Program Administrator Debbie Epilone explained, “As registered nurses, these faculty members have the opportunity to share their expertise and experiences with the next generation of health career employees.” The total educational process is integrated into a lifelong learning experience. These Nurse Educators played a significant role in the future careers of the 107 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who recently graduated from ESBOCES.
President of the Adult Nursing Instructor Unit for CSEA Christine McNally said, “My colleagues and I find that motivating compassionate and competent student nurses is a fulfilling goal of our nursing experience.”
ESBOCES also employs 23 school nurses who work directly with school-age students. From allergies to head lice to broken bones, school nurses are busy all day long. They also receive continual training in disaster preparedness and emergency protocols and they educate student and staff on how to stay healthy. Supervising Nurse Risa LoCascio commented, “Our team of dedicated nurses provide comprehensive health services to promote, protect, maintain, and improve the health of students.”
ESBOCES knows why nurses are consistently ranked at the top of the list as one of the most trusted and respected professions. Nurses really are a big deal!
